The following photographs are of a house addition I worked on for a couple of months over the summer of 2008. I worked with a professional contractor, Kerry Joyner, and another highly skilled carpenter who has apprenticed with Kerry over the years.
During the summer we put up exterior siding and trim as well as porch ceiling boards, interior floor boards, dry-wall touch ups, and foundation support (pouring concrete). I also painted interior walls and exterior trim and siding boards, calked and filled in nail holes. I have worked with my dad framing houses in preceding years and growing up (he is also a contractor; my mom is an architect).
The previous year, I actually drew up the floor plans and elevations for the addition (a sunroom as well as 2 1/2 baths and a second story bedroom). Over the course of working on this home, I learned many things about working as a carpenter and the planning needed to put together plans for construction. I hope to one day work on my own house, building or fixing anything possible. My acquired skills as an apprentice working with my mom has also been beneficial. I am considering studying architecture or landscape architecture in graduate school, but I want to see where my undergraduate work takes me first.
